On Saturday, France and Brazil competed in their opening Group Phase game of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The game marked the Olympic debut of NBA star Victor Wembanyama. France got off to a slow start, as they were outscored 23-15 in the first quarter by Brazil.
However, the French team bounced back in the second quarter, outscoring Brazil 24-13 to take a three-point lead, fueled by a dominant play from Wembanyama, who led the scoring with 14 points and five rebounds by halftime. In addition, NBA veterans Nicolas Batum and Evan Fournier led the way for France in the second quarter, while Brazil saw contributions from Leo Meindl and NBA vet Cristiano Felicio.
Wembanyama and France then kept the momentum rolling in the third, outscoring Brazil 18-9. Despite Brazil attempting a late-game comeback, at the end of regulation France picked up their first win of the Paris Olympics 78-66.

Heading into their first game of the Group Phase, France had been on a four-game losing streak after back-to-back wins in their international friendlies. The team first played Turkey on July 3, where they picked up a dominant 96-46 win.

The game marked the first of four straight losses for France leading up to Saturday's Brazil vs France game, with a 79-67 loss to Serbia following on July 12. In the team's final two international friendly games, they lost to Canada, who finished third in the FIBA World Cup, and Australia in a narrow one-point loss.
