LeBron James and JJ Redick's "foul up six" theory was executed to a tee by the LA Lakers in their 128-123 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. James fouled Marcus Smart as the Lakers led 126-120 with 17 seconds to go. The four-time MVP and his new coach discussed this theory in June when they were podcast co-hosts on "Mind The Game."

The idea is to send the opposing team to the free throw line for two points at best and keep a four-point lead, making it a two-possession game. Several teams play the clock out instead and gamble by letting the other team get a shot off. However, James and Redick both opposed the idea. This is something Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla also does with his team.

The clip resurfaced on Thursday, and Lakers fans were in awe of the high IQ displayed by their star player and rookie coach.

LeBron James and Lakers nearly handed the game to Grizzlies after JJ Redick decided to foul up six

The Lakers were seemingly cruising to another win after JJ Redick called the decision to foul up six. Marcus Smart hit the first free throw and missed the second. It would have been a five-point game if the Lakers grabbed a rebound.

However, Santi Aldama got the offensive rebound over LeBron James under the rim and made it a three-point game. The Grizzlies fouled Anthony Davis on the other end, who made both his attempts and made it a two-possession game with a five-point lead.

The idea to foul up six works only if the following plays are executed to a tee. Had Anthony Davis missed his free throws on the other end, it could have proved to be a costly decision for the Lakers.

Nevertheless, the game remained in the Lakers' favor despite the intriguing back and forth in the final third. Davis got into foul trouble with three minutes left in the third and the Lakers trailing by eight.

However, LeBron James and Dalton Knecht stepped up in that span to turn the game around with Davis on the bench. Once the star big man returned, the Lakers stayed in control and continued their unbeaten run at home with a sixth straight win.
