John Wall returned to Washington on Sunday to watch the Wizards host the OKC Thunder at the Capital One Arena. Wall played 10 seasons for the team that made him the No. 1 pick in the 2010 NBA draft. Although he hasn’t been in the league since the 2022-23 season, he remains popular among Wizards fans.
During a lull in the action in the second quarter, Wall received a video tribute from the Wizards.
Fans on X, formerly Twitter, reacted to the scene, with one tweeting:

“Bro looks depressed. Wizards could use him”
@NBABoards said:
“He is probably the best player they have had since they changed to the Wizards and the best player they have had since the 1970s.”
@Maverick_SZN posted:
“Beal was a bigger influence in Washington lowkey”
One commented:
“Bring him back let him go out right”
Another reacted:
“If Westbrook could regain his form, so could Wall”
John Wall hardly showed emotion when the tribute came up. He briefly raised his hands to acknowledge the smattering of applause from the pro-Wizards crowd. Wall didn't wait for the brief video to end before turning his attention to the court.
Wall earned All-Star nods in five of his 10 years in Washington. He led the Wizards to the playoffs four times but never advanced past the Eastern Conference semifinals. Injuries, particularly to his knees, eventually forced the Washington Wizards to trade him and a first-round pick to the Houston Rockets for Russell Westbrook in 2020.
The former Kentucky star played 40 games for the Rockets before sitting out the entire 2021-22 campaign. He signed with the LA Clippers in 2022, coincidentally teaming up with Westbrook, and played 34 games.
The Clippers didn't re-sign John Wall the next season. Despite saying he wants to return to the NBA, no team has shown interest in him.
John Wall expressed intent to return to the NBA
From the basketball court, John Wall has taken his talent to the broadcasting booth covering the G League. NBA.com reported that Wall has maintained his fitness and has worked out with G League teams, hoping for another shot at the NBA.
When asked about a potential return to the NBA, Wall responded:
“It’d mean the world. You want to go out on your own terms. I want to finish it the way I want. If I play my last game, I want to walk off the court my way.”
In his stint with the Clippers, John Wall averaged 11.4 points, 5.2 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 34 games. Teams who are looking to add a veteran point guard with playoff experience could take a look at him before the season ends.
