The defending NBA champion Boston Celtics had a great night on Tuesday's season opener against the New York Knicks, which they won 132-109. The Celtics raised their 18th championship banner and the players received their rings.

They also tied the NBA record for most 3-pointers made with 29. Jayson Tatum had a statement game with 37 points, four rebounds, and 10 assists, going 14-for-18 and hitting eight 3-point shots. Derrick White scored 24 points and Jaylen Brown added 23 points, combining for 11 threes.

However, they also missed 13 straight shots from beyond the arc trying to break the record late in the fourth quarter. Payton Pritchard went 1-for-9 from beyond the arc during that final stretch.

Despite the Boston Celtics' amazing performance and dominance over the New York Knicks, fans still criticized them for missing 13 straight 3-point shots and failing to break the NBA record.

"Celtics found a way to choke I'm dead," one fan tweeted, pointing out the perception that Boston fails to perform in crucial moments.
"Quality Rockets impression though," a fan wrote, referencing the 27 straight 3s the Rockets missed in a Game 7 in 2018.
"The most Celtics thing to do," another fan commented.

The Boston Celtics tied the NBA record with about eight minutes left in the game and had plenty of time to break it. They also had some great looks, but nothing fell until the final buzzer sounded.

"We had to watch the Celtics ruin the sport with 3PT chucking all night and then when we actually wanted them to make it they go 0/13," one fan opined.
"Basketball terrorism in its purest form," a fan claimed.
"I can appreciate the basketball gods not allowing the Celtics to get that record," another fan remarked.

Boston jumped to an early double-digit lead, taking a 43-24 advantage after the first quarter. It was over at that point as the defending champions couldn't seem to miss against the Knicks.

What's next for the defending NBA champion Celtics?

After a dominant win against the New York Knicks at the TD Garden, the Boston Celtics are set to travel already and face the Washington Wizards on Thursday night. They then move to Michigan to battle the Detroit Pistons on Saturday, so they have a good chance of starting the season 3-0.

The Celtics will get their first big test on Oct. 28 when they return home and welcome the Milwaukee Bucks, with whom they now share the 3-pointers made record.

The defending champions are still the favorites to win the title this season, although they have some depth problems, especially in the absence of Kristaps Porzingis due to injury.

Jayson Tatum looked like an MVP on opening night, while Derrick White and Jaylen Brown remain great. It will be interesting to see how good the Celtics can be now that they have the championship experience on their resume.
