The Miami Heat and LA Clippers had soccer superstar Christian Pulisic sitting courtside in the game, enjoying basketball action. He has just returned from Qatar after the United States men’s national team was eliminated by the Netherlands in the round of 16.
Some sports fans on Twitter didn’t take his presence kindly with some nasty comments:
“He failed us”

Failure might be too strong of a word given the competition that the Americans were facing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Considering that the USMNT didn’t even qualify for the 2018 version of the said event, Christian Pulisic and company made their country proud.
The US squad held England to a 0-0 draw in the first stage, which was already an eye-opening achievement. They beat Iran in a highly-tense matchup with Pulisic’s goal being the difference between the two teams.
The USMNT gamely fought against the Netherlands but eventually lost 3-1. It was disappointing, but most sports fans in the US are hopeful things will only get better.
While taking a break from his sport, Pulisic chose the Miami Heat vs LA Clippers game as the first basketball game to watch. Fortunately, both teams delivered as far as entertainment and action go.
The Heat and Clippers took turns giving and absorbing each other’s biggest shots. LA didn’t have Kawhi Leonard while Miami was missing Kyle Lowry but the back-and-forth was intense.
Eventually, Miami’s depth, home-court advantage and Bam Adebayo settled the score. Part of the Heat’s highlight was Christian Pulisic proudly wearing a Miami Heat jersey with his name on the back.
The Miami Heat continue to struggle with injuries
Christian Pulisic watched a more-or-less complete Miami Heat squad that beat the LA Clippers. Dewayne Dedmon, Jimmy Butler, Victor Oladipo, Tyler Herro and Max Strus have been staples in Miami's injury report.
They all played, which was a big reason why they won against the also short-handed Clippers. Miami’s injury issues have plagued them all season long. Butler has played in just 16 of their games and could still miss more as he deals with a nagging knee injury.
Tyler Herro, the reigning NBA Sixth Man of the Year winner, has played in just 18 games. Many in the squad have missed more than their fair share of games.
At one point, head coach Erik Spoelstra dusted off Udonis Haslem, the oldest player in the league, just to be able to compete. The kind of injuries that the Miami Heat have been dealing with would have discouraged and discombobulated several teams.
Miami, however, is playing the long game. They just want to make sure that their players, particularly Butler and Herro, will be healthy enough down the stretch. The problem with this is contending each night to at least make the playoffs in the stacked Eastern Conference.
Miami is currently in the 10th spot in the East as it owns a 12-14 record. The Washington Wizards and the Chicago Bulls, however, are not going anywhere and could move past them in the standings.
The Heat's culture, tenacity and Spoelstra’s coaching brilliance can only get them so far. They will need healthy bodies to make a push for the playoffs.
