The Washington Commanders ended the regular season with a 12-5 record, securing the second seed in the NFC East thanks to a five-game winning streak that qualified them for the NFC wild-card game. Now heading to the divisional playoffs, Durant and the Commanders will be hoping to keep the winning streak going, while Brown contends for the Rookie of the Year title.
Washington Commanders defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to book their place in the divisional playoffs
The Washington Commanders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced off for the second time this season, having previously met in the opening week. The Buccaneers were hoping to replicate their earlier victory, where they defeated the Washington team 37-20. However, despite a similar start to the game, the outcome was different this time. The Commanders rallied back, securing a spot in the divisional playoffs.
The wild card fixture produced great highlights. After a slow start, the first half ended with both teams tied at 10 points. In the second half, Zane Gonzalez stepped up to slot his second kick of the night, giving the Commanders a 3-point lead. But Bucky Irving's touchdown quickly erased that lead as the third quarter ended in the favor of the Bucs.
During the final quarter, several defensive errors by the Buccaneers allowed the Commanders to score an early touchdown. A McLaughlin field goal tied the game at 20-20. However, a 37-yard field goal attempt by Gonzalez in the last few seconds secured a win for the Commanders.
This win means the Washington team will face the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Playoffs as they travel to the Motor City to take on the No. 1-seeded team on Jan. 19.
