On Christmas Day, Klay Thompson passed Reggie Miller for fifth all-time in 3-pointers made. This feat was an impressive milestone for the Dallas Mavericks guard — and he knew exactly how to make the moment extra special.
During the postgame interview following the Mavs' 105-99 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Thompson described what this accomplishment meant to him:
"It's honestly a dream come true," Thompson said of his 2,561st converted outside shot. "I’m going to celebrate tonight because, just think all the hours you spent shooting and all the shots you gotten up in your lifetime and pass such an icon like Reggie is super surreal for me.”

Thompson surpassed the Indiana Pacers icon with 8:52 left in the fourth quarter. Coming off a Kyrie Irving pindown, Thompson caught the ball off a Dereck Lively pass and let it fly. The crowd inside American Airlines Arena erupted — not only because the Wolves' 28-point second-half lead had been cut to 12 – but because they'd just witnessed history.
To make sure that he and his childhood hero will never forget his Christmas Day feat, the four-time NBA champion revealed exactly how he plans to celebrate the milestone with a gesture:
The exchanging of jerseys is a time-honored tradition of respect in the NBA. Though the transaction will be one-sided in Thompson's case here, it is nevertheless a way to pay tribute to one of the greatest shooters of all time.
Thompson now trails his former Golden State partner Steph Curry, James Harden, Ray Allen and Damian Lillard on the Mount Rushmore of NBA marksmen.
Klay Thompson, Mavericks fall short against T'Wolves
Thompson finished with 12 points on Wednesday night on 4-of-12 shooting. His monumental 3-pointer happened to be a timely basket in the midst of a furious run by the Mavericks looking to stage a comeback.
Back in the second quarter, Dallas ran into a major setback when star guard Luka Doncic left the game after a non-contact injury. Doncic, who'd missed a few games recently due to a left heel contusion, was later diagnosed with a left calf injury and ruled out for the rest of the contest.
Still, the Mavericks persevered. After the Wolves extended the lead to 28 late in the third quarter, Dallas — led by their other All-Star guard Kyrie Irving — chipped away at the lead one possession at a time, eventually cutting it to two with under a minute left in the fourth.
Irving, however, missed a potential go-ahead basket off a timeout, and the Timberwolves held on to claim the six-point victory. Minnesota left Dallas with the W, but amidst all the action, Thompson made sure to secure a moment that would stand the test of time.
