AJ Dybantsa caused a stir in the basketball community when he decided to reclassify for the 2025 draft class. Instead of going to college in 2026, he will advance to the next level next year. UConn, Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Alabama and USC were reportedly among the schools who wanted to secure his commitment. The Utah Prep star, however, shocked many when he decided to commit to Brigham Young University.
Former NBA player Jeff Teague, in the “520 In the Morning” podcast, tossed in his thoughts about Dybantsa’s decision. Per Jeff Teague, the reportedly $7 million worth of NIL deal offered by BYU to Dybantsa was something he would have signed.
The 2021 champ with the Milwaukee Bucks had this to say about the emerging star’s decision to spurn traditional collegiate powerhouse basketball programs:
“I would’ve went to BYU, too. I could go a year without buns.”

The Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) rights have changed collegiate sports. Athletes can now monetize and profit from their endorsements outside pro leagues. A school that can offer a more lucrative NIL package can secure the commitment of top recruits who might want to play for established programs.
The Royal Blue, BYU’s program that allows alumni, sponsors and fans to help athletes with donations, targeted AJ Dybantsa. He became their first five-star recruit in the US. A statement came from the body following the announcement of Dybantsa’s commitment:
“We are thrilled about AJ Dybantsa committing to the BYU basketball program. During his decision-making process, he said he was looking for a program that he felt would be family-oriented, had a head coach who would develop him, and a program that would win. He’s found that in BYU.
“As the official NIL collective of BYU Athletics, we are glad to play a role in AJ’s NIL deal while he’s with the program.”
Teague believes that for a college student/athlete, the compensation and the opportunity were too big to pass up.
