Before Austin Reaves was sharing the court with LeBron James for the LA Lakers, the young guard was posting memes about LeBron not having a ring on social media.

In this year's NBA 2k25 MyPlayer mode, Reaves' fully voiced in-game character interacts with the user's MyPlayer. The character of the LA guard also pulls the receipts on players for social media posts from years back.

In a cutscene, 'MP', the default nickname for NBA 2k25 users' MyPlayers, praises Austin Reaves, saying how inspirational it was that Reaves went from an undrafted player to starting alongside LeBron James. In response, Reaves pulls the receipts, recalling how MP once talked trash about him online.

Reaves recalls a social media post that MP posted years back in which he called the LA guard a wannabe roleplayer at best. The game then turns things over to players, offering them two options in response.

One option results in an in-game challenge that requires users to outscore Reaves by five points, while the other option challenges players to hold Reaves under six points.

Looking back at Austin Reaves' infamous tweets about LeBron James

As previously mentioned, before Austin Reaves was a starting player for the LA Lakers, he was a young social media user eager to crack jokes about LeBron James.

In 2023, during an appearance on JJ Redick's Old Man & The Three podcast, Reaves opened up on the situation. As he explained, following a game, he saw the SportsCenter account post old tweets he made criticizing LeBron and joking about his lack of rings.

During the 2011 finals, for example, Reaves posted that Dirk Nowitzki was too much for LeBron. The following year, he joined other social media users in joking about James' lack of an NBA championship, reposting a meme that read:

“When I need some peace and quiet, I set my phone to LeBron Mode: No Ring”

But that wasn't all, two years later, Reaves was at it again, reposting a meme that said both Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant were better than James. As the meme explained, neither of the two needed to join or assemble a super team like James did in Miami to win titles.

During his appearance on The Old Man & The Three, Reaves opened up about the awkward situation once the old posts resurfaced:

"It's like there's one or two things I can do. I can shut up and hope he don't see it or I can call him over here and be like, 'Look man...' And I did, I was like, 'Bron come here.'"

"He was like, 'What's up?' He walks over. I was like, 'I was a Kobe stan back in the day.' I was like, 'I was shitting on you back in 2012.' He just busted out laughing. He was like, 'I don't care about this.'"

Thankfully for Reaves, LeBron didn't hold any grudge against him. However, it's a lesson for youngsters to be careful about what they are saying on social media. It might come back to hurt them.
