Fresh from a triumphant Paris Olympic run, Team USA head coach Steve Kerr delivered a speech during the opening night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. As he endorsed the Democrats and threw shade at Republican candidate Donald Trump, Kerr received praise and gratitude from former U.S. president and avid basketball fan Barack Obama.
Obama addressed Kerr’s speech, thanking the American coach for his service in the Olympics, where he mentored Team USA to their fifth straight gold medal. He also expressed gratitude to Kerr for standing up for what he believes in.
“Let’s go, Coach Kerr! Thanks for bringing home the gold for Team USA, and for your leadership at a crucial moment for our country,” Obama wrote while posting a six-minute clip of Kerr’s speech.

The Olympic win gave Kerr’s first Olympic gold medal as coach, to add to his four NBA rings as the head tactician for the Golden State Warriors.
Obama was the 44th president of the United States and served the country from 2009 to 2017. He is also a basketball fan, and invited Kerr’s Warriors to the White House after their championship run in 2015.
Obama grew up a fan of the Chicago Bulls, where Kerr won three consecutive NBA championships from 1996 to 1998 alongside all-time greats Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
Kerr delivered his speech at Chicago’s United Center, the Bulls’ home arena and a witness to Kerr’s NBA titles as a player.
Meanwhile, Obama will be at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday to deliver a speech.
Steve Kerr ends speech with Stephen Curry reference in jab at Donald Trump
Steve Kerr left the crowd in awe as he used his marquee player Stephen Curry’s famous celebration to take a swipe at Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump.
"After the results are tallied that night, we can in the words of Stephen Curry, we can tell Donald Trump... night night!" said Kerr.
The crowd then cheered as they acknowledged the reference. “Night night” has been Curry’s famed celebration whenever he hits an important shot during games. He even brought it out during his gold-medal-winning shot against France in the Olympic finals two weeks ago.
Kerr has been vocal about his political views for a long time. He has advocated earlier for gun control legislation, and has openly supported the Black Lives Matter movement.
Before the speech, Kerr entered the stage to the song “Sirius,” which was the designated music for the Bulls’ pre-game introductions during the 1990s.
The Warriors coach has officially endorsed current Vice President Kamala Harris for November's presidential election, against Trump, who is aiming for a second term.
