As previously mentioned, both France and Germany entered into Friday's France vs Germany game with an undefeated record in the Group Phase. Prior to the start of the Olympics, however, France struggled throughout its slate of international friendly games, posting a 2-3 record.
After getting off to a hot start against Turkey with a 96-46 win on July 3, France then picked up a dominant win over Germany 90-66 on July 6. Just two days later, however, when the teams met in a highly-anticipated rematch, Germany secured a 70-65 win, handing France its first international friendly loss of the summer.
The team was then unable to bounce back against Serbia, falling 79-67 before then losing to Canada 85-73 on July 19. In its final international friendly leading up to the Olympics, France loss a closely contested game to Australia 83-82 before beginning its Olympic campaign with a dominant win over Brazil.
The team then followed it up with a narrow with over Japan several days later on Tuesday to push its Olympic record to 2-0.
On the flip side, Germany posted a 3-2 record through the international friendlies leading up to the Olympics, losing its first game of the summer to France, before then winning the rematch on July 8 as previously mentioned.
The team then built on its momentum, rattling off back-to-back wins against the Netherlands and Japan, before narrowly losing their July 22 game to Team USA. Once Olympic action tipped off from Paris, Germany was able to pick up a 97-77 win over Japan, before then picking up a 13-point victory over Brazil on Tuesday.
With both teams sitting atop Group A, the focus will now shift to playoff rounds, which begin with quarterfinal action on Tuesday. Teams who advance through the quarterfinals will play on Thursday in the semifinal games before the bronze and gold medal games take place on Aug. 10.
