Since coming into the league in 2017, Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has established himself as one of the league's biggest stars. Tatum is a five-time All-Star, making the team every year since 2020. He has also made the All-NBA third-team once (2020) and the All-NBA first-team thrice (2022-2024).

While he has already accomplished much, two awards have eluded him: the MVP and the Finals MVP Award. In an interview with Forbes published on Nov. 27, Tatum stated his desire to win these two prestigious awards.

Tatum's desire to eventually win the MVP and the FMVP in the future has brought out his doubters.

"Has a role player done this before?" One person asked.
"League MVP simply isn’t in his future and that’s okay. Finals MVP 99% chance to hit," another fan chimed in.

On the other hand, some fans supported Tatum's aspirations to add these two awards to his trophy case. Despite the support, some also explained why winning these awards might be difficult for him.

"He's capable of both MVP is just unlikely since he's on an elite team and sacrifices his stats to play winning ball," one person said.
"He will get the fmvp this year if they go, mvp not so much with Jokic devil magic," another person pointed out.
"Long career ahead, he’ll get his chance," one fan tweeted.

Jayson Tatum came close to winning the Finals MVP when last season culminated with the Boston Celtics winning the championship.

Tatum averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 1.0 steals in five games against the Dallas Mavericks. However, the award went to Jaylen Brown who averaged 20.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 5.0 apg and 1.6 spg.

Jayson Tatum came close to MVP award win in the past

Jayson Tatum had a shot to win the Finals MVP award after the Boston Celtics won the title last season. This isn't just an assumption; Tatum received four votes to win the prize, while Jaylen Brown had seven.

The FMVP award is not the only one he has come close to winning. Tatum has also received votes for the NBA's MVP award in previous seasons.

In 2020, he received one fifth-place vote for this award. In 2022, he received eight fourth-place and 19 fifth-place votes.

The closest Tatum came to winning the MVP award was in 2023. He ended up fourth in the awards race with one third-place vote, 89 for fourth place, and eight for fifth place.

Last season, Jayson Tatum got one vote for third place, 14 for fourth place and 39 for fifth place.
