Back in 2000, Julius Erving's youngest son Corey died due to accidental drowning. According to reports, the late Corey accidentally rammed his vehicle into a pond, which led to his drowning. Apparently, "Dr. J" was unaware of the incident given that nobody was aware of the situation. With that said, Erving sought help within the nation to find his young boy.

Unfortunately, it appears that Corey's untimely demise was also caused by his questionable life decisions. Sources mentioned that before his death, Julius Erving's son was dealing with a drug addiction. His struggles were made more apparent when his body was found at the scene of the crime. Investigator Sheriff Don Eslinger stated that Corey was under the influence before the tragedy.

The young man's body was already decomposed given that it took several months before they were able to find Corey. Investigators found traces of cocaine during an autopsy. However, he wasn't intoxicated enough to become unable to escape the sinking vehicle or let alone drive. In fact, even the detectives were clueless as to why Corey allowed himself to drown.

Julius Erving sued the people behind Alaqua Lakes

The late Corey Erving, son of NBA legend Julius Erving, sued Alaqua Lakes back in 2000 for his son's untimely death. Back when he was still alive, Corey usually took a shortcut near Alaqua Lakes that led to the Erving Residences. Apparently, it seems like his death was caused by an ongoing construction that took place on the same shortcut.

According to reports, a pile of trees and debris were getting in the way, which made it nearly impossible to see certain accident-prone areas. True enough, Corey ended up missing the pond that he ultimately found himself drowning in.

Julius Erving was furious to learn that the establishment was aware that his son had entered the vicinity. As a result, the NBA legend filed a lawsuit for two accusations.

Julius feels that given Corey was on the property that day, U.S. Security Associates Inc., the organization that provided security guards at Alaqua Lakes' entrance, should never have permitted him to enter. Erving also found it strange that when his son vanished, they never disclosed his presence to anyone.

Honestly, it was just a horrible mess that could've all been avoided had there been better security and strict implementations of road restrictions. While some might put the blame on Corey himself for driving under the influence of drugs, he could've still been alive if the shortcut was never open to begin with.
