Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic is on his way to making history as he's got a chance to sign a supermax contract that's worth up to $318 million. Right now, he's in the second year of his $215 million rookie supermax deal that he signed with the team in 2021.
Keeping a star player happy isn't easy. The owners and the front office will do everything for their stars to be satisfied and stay with the team. Doncic could become the first player to earn as much as $70 million in one season. ESPN's Bobby Marks broke down the logistics of what could be Doncic's future earnings.
"Doncic is on pace to become the first $70 million player in NBA history," Marks said. "If he earns All-NBA in 2023-24, Doncic would then become eligible to sign a five-year projected $318 million supermax extension.
"He is not allowed to sign the extension in 2024 because he will have only six years of service but he will have met the criteria (All-NBA in two of the immediately preceding three seasons) and will be able to sign an extension in 2025 that would kick in for the 2026-27 season."

The salary cap is projected to increase in the final year of the potential supermax deal that could be given to the Slovenian star. If that becomes possible, Doncic could earn as much as $83.6 million in his final year. The Mavs star could earn approximately $63 million if the contract is divided equally through five years.
However, contracts are usually divided unequally, with the first year being the period where a player earns the least. In the final year, players get to earn the most money.

Other stars could join Luka Doncic in signing a huge contract extension
Luka Doncic headlines a group of star players who could get a huge payday in the near future. The young stars of the NBA could make the former stars jealous, as most of them are eligible to sign a supermax contract extension. Doncic's $70 million per season deal isn't the only shocking deal that could take place.
Young stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jaren Jackson Jr. and De'Aaron Fox are just a few players who could sign a supermax deal. OKC Thunder's SGA could earn as much as $64 million per year. The Memphis Grizzlies could offer JJJ a contract that gives him $63 million in one season.
Fox could sign an extension with the Sacramento Kings that gives him $61 in one year.
NBA money is no joke, and Luka Doncic is talented enough to deserve an insane amount of money from the Mavs.
