Dallas Mavericks superstar guard Luka Doncic has long been criticized for his defensive effort. However, amid his career-best steals production, the five-time All-Star is seemingly unfazed by his detractors.

Doncic has been sidelined for the last two games due to a left heel contusion. But before his injury, he was regularly racking up high-volume swipes. Through 20 outings, he ranks second in the NBA in steals per game (2.1), trailing only Atlanta Hawks defensive-oriented guard Dyson Daniels (3.0).

During an interview with the Slovenian news website 24ur.com published on Sunday, Doncic was asked about his naysayers' gripes about his defense. He noted that he is unconcerned about proving them wrong, as they will continuously find aspects of his game to nitpick.

"Whether I play great or bad, there will always be something, so I don't focus on that criticism," Doncic said.

Doncic added that he is content with the Mavericks' recent play and confident in their championship-contending prospects.

"Of course, we've been proving that in the last few games. The start wasn't good, but in the last few games, we've been proving that we can play with anyone," Doncic said.

Dallas (18-10) sits fourth in the Western Conference, ranking fifth in the NBA in offensive rating (116.9) and 10th in defensive rating (111.0). Meanwhile, the team is trending up, winning nine of its last 11 contests.

Luka Doncic "hopeful" to overcome heel injury woes soon

In addition to his ongoing two-game absence, Luka Doncic has missed six other contests this season due to heel problems. However, the 2024 NBA scoring champion is optimistic he can soon put his injury struggles behind him.

During his interview with 24ur.com, Doncic said his left heel ailment is "getting better" and he is "hopeful" he can return next game. He added that he is glad his setback occurred now rather than in the postseason.

"Little problems are very annoying, but it's better to have it early in the season than later," Doncic said.

Doncic is considered questionable for Monday's home matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers (9-19). The Mavericks have gone 6-2 in his absence. So, they will likely be favored to emerge victorious against the rebuilding squad regardless of the five-time All-NBA first team selectee's status.
