TikTok was banned after lawmakers and U.S. officials sounded the alarm for years, citing supposed risks to national security given the platform's ties to China. The ban on the app was due to take effect on Sunday, and the platform voluntarily shut down service to its users late on Saturday.
When users tried to access TikTok, the app displayed the following message, suggesting President-elect Donald Trump may revoke the ban after he takes office.
"Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S.," the message reads. "Unfortunately, that means you can't use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!"
