“I think Kyrie might be the plague”- NBA fans destroy Kyrie Irving after Mavs star refused exit interview amidst free-agency speculation

Kyrie Irving and the Dallas Mavericks had a disappointing season, missing even the play-in after many expected them to be a top-six seed, thanks to an 8-12 run in the 20 games Irving played.

The Mavs’ letdown has led to speculation that Irving could be on his way out of Dallas. That comes as the star point guard is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. That speculation was only amplified after ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reported on Sunday that Irving declined to take part in his exit interview with Mavs reporters:

“Kyrie Irving declined to do an exit interview with the Dallas media. Other Mavs, including Luka Doncic, did exit interviews today,” MacMahon reported.

Following the report, NBA fans on Twitter went off on Irving, calling him out for his antics, with many blaming him for Dallas’ lost season.

“I think Kyrie might be the plague that Joel and Ellie are running away from in The Last of Us,” one fan said.
“Kyrie strikes again, he is such a franchise and locker room killer. Cuban can talk all he wants about bringing him back, Luka would revolt if they do,” another said.

Some fans were fine with the news, as they were just happy that Dallas may be able to move on from Irving and retool:

“He’s gone, and honestly I’m okay with it. Securing the pick was huge. They got big salaries off the books by trading for Kyrie, they now have near max money. They can also use the top 10 pick as a huge trade piece this summer. Mavs will be okay,” one said.

Meanwhile, some defended Irving, asserting that he doesn’t owe the media anything:

“Why should he answer the same questions again? He owes the media nothing,” one fan said.

Here are a few more top fan reactions to MacMahon’s report on Irving:

Luka Doncic wants Kyrie Irving to stay in Dallas

Unlike Kyrie Irving, Dallas Mavericks’ other star, Luka Doncic, opted to take part in the team’s exit interviews on Sunday. Doncic touched on his future in Dallas, explaining that he's happy with the franchise:

"I'm happy here, so there's nothing to worry (about)," Doncic said.

He added that the rumors about him possibly requesting a trade during the summer of 2024 did not come from him:

"It was funny, you know, because I didn't know that was true," Doncic said.

Doncic was then asked what the Mavs need to do to improve on their 38-44 finish this season. He explained that something must change but didn’t specify exactly what:

"Something's got to change, for sure," Doncic said. "I mean, last year we went to Western Conference finals. We were having fun. I always talk about the chemistry we had. It was great. But something's got to change for sure."

However, Doncic added that he would still like the Mavs to re-sign Kyrie Irving in free agency:

"I think it's a great fit," Doncic said. "Obviously people are going to say no, (and) look at the results we are having, but like I said, chemistry and relationships takes time. I wish he can still be here."
