Ja Morant's availability against the Chicago Bulls on Saturday is uncertain. The Memphis Grizzlies guard also missed Thursday's 119-94 loss to the Charlotte Hornets. Morant injured himself in Memphis' preseason opener against the Dallas Mavericks. He tweaked his ankle in the second quarter on a defensive possession as he tracked back a lopsided transition attack from the Mavericks.
Naji Marshall's pass struck Morant's right ankle, which caused the injury. The two-time All-Star returned but was seemingly bothered by the ailment, forcing him out of the contest for good. MRIs revealed he has a mild ankle sprain. The Grizzlies have been cautious with their approach for Morant, with opening night two weeks away.
On Wednesday, coach Taylor Jenkins said he expects his star player to be available for the regular season opener against the Utah Jazz on Oct. 23. However, there was no update on his preseason return, making it unlikely for him to suit up in Chicago.

Ja Morant and Grizzlies have multiple injury scares ahead of 2024-25 NBA season
The Grizzlies dropped into the lottery last year after a bevy of injuries forced them into tanking. Ja Morant was among those, followed by Marcus Smart, Desmond Bane and others. There are a few injury scares the Grizzlies are dealing with ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season, too.
2023 DPOY Jaren Jakcson Jr. is dealing with a hamstring issue, while veteran guard Marcus Smart exited Thursday's game against the Hornets with a knee issue. Meanwhile, GG Jackson is out for at least three months, Brandon Clarke missed the last game with knee soreness, and Vince Williams Jr. is out for at least four weeks.
The Grizzlies injury report looks more or less the same as last year. Nevertheless, Morant and Jackson are expected to be available for the season opener. That should help the Grizzlies stay afloat as other long-term absentees recover and are ready to contribute.
Memphis' depth has been its backbone amid its 2021, 2022 and 2023 playoffs runs. It will be crucial ahead of next season, too.
