Is Olympic Basketball single elimination? Qualification and knockout process (Imagn)

Over the weekend, Olympic basketball began as part of the 2024 Summer Olympics. Here is a full breakdown of how the action will unfold over the next week.

Olympic basketball is not a single elimination format. Countries are split up into groups, where they play a series of Group Phase games. From there, a handful of teams are chosen to advance to the knockout round and compete for a medal.

As far as who advances, that all stems from who performs best during the Group Phase round. The teams with the two best records from each group advance, along with the top two teams in third place in their respective group.

During the knockout round, the format then shifts to a single elimination. The last team standing is then awarded the gold medal, with the loser of the final game winning silver. As for the bronze medal, a separate game is played during the knockout round.

The Group Phase round of Olympic basketball began on July 27th and will go on until August 4th. Two days after the conclusion of the opening round, the knockout stage will begin. Basketball will culminate in the Olympics on August 11th with the gold medal game between the final two teams.

What are the groups for Olympic basketball in the Paris games?

For the 2024 Olympics, all the qualifying basketball teams have been split up into three groups, with each section containing four teams.

Group A has one of the top favorites to walk away with a medal, Team Canada. Also in this group is Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece, Australia and Spain. Canada and Australia are off to an early lead as each squad won its opening matchup.

Group B might end up being the most competitive of men's Olympic basketball as it has two strong squads in Germany and France. Rounding out this group are Brazil and Japan. As the host country, France will be looking to walk away with a medal in basketball. They are led by reigning Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert.

Group C has the heavy favorite to win the gold medal, Team USA. They have been paired with South Sudan, Puerto Rico and Serbia. The United States kicked off the Olympics in stellar fashion, picking up a blowout win over Nikola Jokic and Serbia.
