Paul George won't play for the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday against the Orlando Magic in their preseason encounter. “PG-13,” who hyperextended his knee on Monday in the first quarter against the Atlanta Hawks, will be re-evaluated in one week. He will reportedly stay in Philadelphia as the 76ers travel to Orlando for the matchup against the Magic.

Nick Nurse, the 76ers coach, said on Tuesday following the 104-89 win against the Hawks that George appeared in the training facility to be looked at by team doctors. According to Nurse, the All-Star would undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.

Later in the day, Shams Charania reported:

“Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George has a bone bruise and no structural damage to his left knee and will be re-evaluated in approximately one week, team says.”

How did Paul George’s injury happen?

Paul George guarded Hawks forward Jalen Johnson near the left elbow early in the second quarter. Johnson drove strong to the paint and bumped George along the way. The hit forced “PG-13” to take a step back, which was when he hyperextended his knee.

The Philadelphia 76ers kept him in the locker room for the rest of the game. Caleb Martin started in his place in the third quarter.

When will Paul George return?

George’s re-evaluation will determine when he will make his regular-season debut for the Philadelphia 76ers. As there's reportedly no structural damage, there's still hope that he can play on Oct. 23 against the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 76ers are one of the challengers to end the Boston Celtics’ reign in the NBA. To accomplish that, the team will need their star offseason acquisition to be healthy.

Injuries have become an issue for the 76ers before the regular season has started

George isn’t the only player on the 76ers’ injury report. Rookie Jared McCain, who has been superb in the preseason, has been diagnosed with pulmonary contusion, per report. He won't play against the Orlando Magic and will be monitored by the training staff. The team hasn't given a definite timeline for his return.

Joel Embiid is expected to play in the season opener but will be wearing a brace and won't be available in back-to-back games.
