After surviving a late scare from Australia, Steph Curry and Team USA emerged with a closer-than-anticipated 98-92 victory. Curry said after the game that they need to “clean up” their play on both ends of the court before their next tuneup schedule. On Wednesday, the Golden State Warriors superstar will be available to help the Americans against Serbia.
Curry didn’t have his usual deadly efficiency against the Boomers. He went 1-for-6, the only one on Team USA with only one converted field-goal attempt. “Chef Curry” added one rebound, one assist and one turnover to his forgettable night. Not many will be surprised if he bounces back with a big game against the highly-touted Serbians.

Steph Curry has faced Serbia before with a gold medal at stake
Steph Curry withdrew from the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro to recover from ankle injuries. Had he suited up for Team USA, he would have been part of the group that beat Nikola Jokic and Co. for the gold medal.
Curry is familiar with the Serbs, though, even if he will only be making his Olympic debut next month. The two-time MVP was part of the American team that won the 2014 FIBA World Cup at the expense of Serbia.
“The Joker” wasn’t around but the Balkan nation had NBA talents on that roster. Milos Teodosic, Nemanja Bjelica, Nenad Kristic, Bogdan Bogdanovic and others put up a good fight before getting overwhelmed 129-92.
Steph Curry and Team USA will open the Olympics against Serbia
The game on Wednesday is highly anticipated but pales in significance to what will happen in two weeks. USA versus Serbia in Abu Dhabi is a no-bearing game that could go either way. Nikola Jokic might not even suit up as the Serbians will be playing the second night of a back-to-back set.
Both teams have their eyes focused on the showdown next month in Paris. The Serbs and the Americans are in Group C along with South Sudan and Puerto Rico. USA and Serbia will open the Group Stage with a mouthwatering encounter. If Jokic doesn’t play on Wednesday, the Olympics will be his first time to line up against Steph Curry and Joel Embiid in international competition.
Team USA and Serbia are expected to come out of the first round. The two could meet again as the tournament moves forward. A battle in the gold medal game between the two teams will not surprise anyone. Wednesday’s game is a teaser of what might happen in Paris.
