Is Zach Edey playing tonight against Orlando Magic? (Imagn)

Since making his Summer League debut on July 8, Zach Edey has yet to suit up again for the Memphis Grizzlies. Nonetheless, the team will continue their schedule on Wednesday night against the Magic.

The Grizzlies and Magic are slated to tip-off at 7 p.m. Eastern Time Wednesday, with the game being aired on ESPN+. As of now, there is no clear answer regarding Edey's status.

During his debut against the Utah Jazz, Zach Edey suffered an ankle injury early on. The No. 9 pick managed to finish the game, but has gotten DNP'ed in every game since. While he's missed their last handful of games, reports have surfaced that Edey is expected to make a return at some point during Summer League.

This update does open the door for Edey potentially taking the floor against the Magic. He's had nearly 10 days to recover from the injury he suffered in his debut. Depending on how bad he hurt his ankle, Edey might be in good enough shape to return to action against Orlando Wednesday.

Following their matchup with the Magic, the Grizzlies are slated to play Thursday in a back-to-back.

How did Zach Edey perform in Summer League before getting injured?

Toward the end of his college run at Purdue, Zach Edey was one of the top players in college basketball. Before entering the NBA draft, he averaged 25.2 points and 12.2 rebounds as a senior.

Despite putting up such impressive numbers, many were skeptical about how Edey's game would transition to the next level. Critics doubted if he had the mobility and athleticism to keep up with the modern game. The Memphis Grizzlies clearly weren't phased by the outside noise, as they decided to draft the Purdue big man in the lottery.

In his Summer League debut, Zach Edey managed to silence some of his doubters. He put together an impressive two-way showing against the Utah Jazz, posting a stat line of 14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks.

Seeing that it's only Summer League and was one game, the jury is still very much out on Edey. That said, a performance like this should have the Grizzlies feeling a little better about their draft night decision.

As he gets ready to enter the pros, Edey will be joining a team that is looking to be competitive right away. After injuries and suspensions derailed last season for them, Ja Morant and the Grizzlies are looking to get back to the top of the Western Conference standings in 2025.
