Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies had their six-game winning streak snapped by the Dallas Mavericks, who staged a 15-point comeback to win their fifth-straight game on Tuesday. This game, part of the Emirates NBA Cup, carries significant weight for the Mavericks as they aim for a Wild Card spot.

Morant struggled to start the game against Dallas, failing to score in the first quarter but contributing two assists to help Memphis lead 26-25.

Morant scored his first basket of the game in the second quarter, a floater two minutes in, before adding a steal and a breakaway dunk with 7:22 left on the clock. He added a free throw in the final seconds to bring his total to five points at the half as the Grizzlies trailed 60-57.

Morant found life in the second half where he had 26 points. However, the Mavericks' furious fourth-quarter rally eliminated the Grizzlies' 15-point lead en route to a 121-116 win.

NBA analyst believes Ja Morant’s Grizzlies are ‘legit contenders’

The Memphis Grizzlies have faced significant injuries to start the season, with key players such as Ja Morant, Marcus Smart, Zach Edey, Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. all missing time.

Despite these setbacks, the Grizzlies have maintained their position among the top teams in the tough Western Conference, holding a 14-7 record after 21 games.

The Ringer's Michael Pina believes the Grizzlies’ ability to perform despite these injuries proves their depth and potential to reach the Finals.

“Before this season started, I picked Memphis to make the Finals. A couple of months in, I could not feel better about it,” Pina wrote.
“Despite injuries to Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Zach Edey, and several other contributing role players, the Grizzlies are 14-7, rank fifth in net rating, and have proved elite on both sides of the ball.”

The Grizzlies’ net rating ranks behind only the Boston Celtics, OKC Thunder, Cleveland Cavaliers and Houston Rockets. Their offense is ranked fifth, while their defense sits sixth.

“They’re big, versatile, and tough. Most of their lineups include multiple ballhandling threats who can shoot, make plays and hold their own on the other end,” Pina said.

Up next for the Grizzlies are the Sacramento Kings, followed by a road game against the Celtics on Saturday.
