The Memphis Grizzlies might have to start their season with their star, Ja Morant. According to the latest report, the young Grizzlies star suffered an ankle sprain on Sunday. Grizzlies News beat reporter for The Commercial Appeal, Damichael Cole, said that Morant suffered the injury during practice.

The Grizzlies' star is considered "week-to-week" in his return timeline, which means that he will be ruled out for the Grizzlies' preseason opener on Oct. 6 against the Detroit Pistons. Moreover, the Grizzlies are set to open their regular season in just over two weeks. They will play the New Orleans Pelicans on October 22.

Since he was drafted in 2019, Ja Morant has never been fully available through six seasons. In the last two seasons alone, he has missed 105 of 164 regular-season games. He missed the first 25 games of the 2023-24 season due to a gun incident suspension.

When he returned, after 9 games, he was ruled out for the season. The Grizzlies reported that Morant was set to undergo shoulder surgery. In the next season, Morant played only 50 games. He missed several games due to injury, including 10 games after he attempted a dangerous dunk.

There is little to no doubt that Ja Morant is the face of the Memphis Grizzlies. However, given his history with injuries, he might disappoint a lot of fans. Moreover, in the last three seasons, the Grizzlies have missed the playoffs once, and twice they have moved beyond the first round.

Kendrick Perkins sends urgency message to Ja Morant for upcoming season

Earlier this week, Perkins appeared on the Road Trippin' podcast. When asked about which player between Trae Young and Ja Morant had more to prove this season, Perkins picked the Grizzlies star.

"It's Ja. Like c'mon dog, c'mon dog, like two, three years ago," Perkins said. "We would be having a conversation about you as the next face of the NBA, like, and this some real sh**. ESPN went down to Memphis for a week and did an All-Access."

The former NBA player also added that Morant had lost a lot of fans since he arrived in the league. Perkins said that just like fans across the NBA, a few years ago, Ja Morant was his favorite player, and now he wanted the Grizzlies star to win his fans back.

"But now, also, hey bro, can you carry this organization? No one is expecting a damn thing from the Memphis Grizzlies, but Ja could change that narrative. And now, speculations are there, is Memphis going to give him 200, 250, 300 million dollars? Is he ready to dance?" Perkins added. (Timestamp 40:00 onwards)

Ja Morant is still one of the most electric players in the league. However, it is also time for him to prove that he can be reliable.
