New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson signed an extension that will wrap him up for the next four years, per NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski. The deal, however, comes as a surprise due to him making a move that potentially leaves money on the table.

The four-year, $156.5 million contract, which comes out to just under $40 million annually, is approximately $113 million less in guaranteed money than the contract he could have signed next offseason.

The move can be seen as highly strategic for the Knicks, who gain a wealth of flexibility that can be used to lock up other players and build a strong core over the next few years.

Per Wojnarowski, the All-Star's deal comes with a fourth-year player option that would allow him to potentially recoup the $113 million he's leaving on the table. He could, after this contract, sign a four-year, $323 million extension for 2028 or a five-year, $418 million extension in 2029.

Jalen Brunson's contract breakdown

SeasonAgeSalary (per Spotrac)
2025-26
29$34,933,036
2026-2730$37,727,679

2028-2932$43,316,964

The Knicks traded for Mikal Bridges this offseason, uniting the former Nets wing with three of his Villanova teammates — Brunson, Josh Hart and Donte DiVincenzo. All four were members of the 2016 NCAA championship team, and all three, minus Hart, went on to win another in 2018.

Brunson's new contract gives the Knicks more space to lock up his friends and teammates.

Bridges is entering the final year of a four-year, $90 million contract that he signed with Phoenix in 2021. Hart just signed a veteran extension for four years and $81 million and DiVincenzo joined the team last year on a four-year, $47 million deal.

Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart joke about defense on podcast

Jalen Brunson runs the "The Roommates Show" podcast with Josh Hart.

On their July 5 episode, the two mulled over who would guard Paul George, who will be a prominent Eastern Conference foe for the Knicks after signing with the Philadelphia 76ers this offseason.

They began deliberating over lengthy forwards Bridges and OG Anunoby before Brunson chimed in with an "I got PG."

"Why you putting your hand up?" Hart said. ... "You got Jared McCain."

Other key Knicks players, Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson, are locked up through the 2025-26 season. So, the new deal gives them room to extend them if need be.
