Jarred Vanderbilt has not played for the LA Lakers since Feb. 1, 2024, against the Boston Celtics. He suffered a foot sprain in that game and underwent a few surgeries in the offseason before suffering a setback in training camp. Coach JJ Redick recently gave an update on his potential return.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Redick confirmed that Vanderbilt has been medically cleared to return. Barring any setbacks, he'll likely make his season debut on Saturday against the Golden State Warriors.
"He's medically cleared and available for Saturday," Redick said via ESPN. "This whole process with him has been about the long term and we're going to continue to be patient. Him and I and the medical [staff] will all speak on Saturday, and if he's feeling good, he'll be available, and that's no guarantee that he will play."

It has been a long road to recovery for Jarred Vanderbilt, who signed a four-year, $48 million extension following the 2023 NBA playoffs. However, he has only played in 29 games since then, suffering from foot problems.
The Kentucky product was initially diagnosed with a right foot sprain in February 2024, but he was eventually ruled out for the rest of the season. He underwent surgery on his right foot during the offseason. He also had a procedure done to remove bone spurs in his left foot.
Vanderbilt was supposed to return in December but suffered a setback during rehab. There was a fluid buildup in his right knee, which further extended his road to recovery.
Jarred Vanderbilt excited to return after almost a year out of action
It has been a rough year for Jarred Vanderbilt with two foot surgeries and a knee injury. Vanderbilt opened up about his return and expressed his excitement in finally being able to help the LA Lakers in any way he can.
"Obviously it's been a while since I played so I think those natural nerves, but other than that, I'm excited," Vanderbilt said via ESPN. "I think this is an exciting period. This whole process hasn't been exciting, so this is an exciting period for me."
Vanderbilt provides perimeter defense for the Lakers, likely splitting minutes with Rui Hachimura at the small forward position. His offense might not be as fluid as Hachimura's, but he can defend all five positions.
The 25-year-old also gives the Lakers added depth that it desperately needs. It will be interesting to see how coach JJ Redick will use the defensive specialist. He's likely easing Vanderbilt into the rotation given how much time he missed. It's unclear if he'll be on a minutes restriction in his first few games.
