The 30-year-old was born in London to a Jamaican mother and an English father. She grew up in the United Kingdom till the age of 12. In 2006, the former "Arize" member relocated to New York City with her mother, a teacher. The transfer from London to New York was not smooth, as Mai was bullied for her accent when she initially moved.
Ella completed her education graduating from Queens High School of Teaching in Glen Oaks, Queens. Ella returned to London when she was 17. She joined the British and Irish Modern Music Institute starting her music journey.
