Lakers head coach JJ Redick has shared an update on star guard D'Angelo Russell after he missed most of the fourth quarter during Monday's game against the Detroit Pistons. The Lakers endured a heartbreaking 117-114 home loss and Russell's absence was felt as the team needed his offensive spark to overcome a double-digit deficit in the final period.

Postgame, coach Redick explained that Russell sustained an injury to his hand or thumb but noted that the exact details of the injury were still unclear.

"JJ Redick said D'Angelo Russell is getting either his hand or thumb looked at right now. Not sure exactly what it is yet," Lakers reporter tweeted after the game.

Russell, who signed a two-year, $36 million contract with the Lakers before last season, saw limited action in the final period, logging just 2:06 minutes. During that time, he failed to attempt a shot, grab a rebound, or record an assist, finishing with only one turnover in the fourth quarter.

Overall, the former Golden State Warriors guard had a quiet game, finishing with five points and five assists in 15:30 minutes. He struggled with his shooting, going 1-of-5 from the field, including 1-of-4 from beyond the arc, while converting both of his free-throw attempts.

Fans react to D'Angelo Russell's potential injury

"More like pulling his thumb out of his nether regions," said a user.
