"More guards than Shawshank" - Jon Rothstein believes Miami Hurricanes are playing chess not checkers

Miami v Texas
Miami cut down the nets as they won the Midwest regional.

Miami pulled off a pair of stunners by taking out No. 1 seed Houston and then No. 2 seed Texas.

The Hurricanes made it to the first Final Four in the program's history. They play with a tenacity on the glass and have size in their frontcourt.

College basketball insider Jon Rothstein really likes their depth, especially at the guard position. He said as much on "Up & Adams."

"Miami is playing chess while everybody else is playing checkers. They are forcing you to match up with them, not the other way round. Okay, what can I say? Miami basketball, more guards than Shawshank."

Miami (29-7), seeded fifth, plays UConn (29-8), seeded fourth, in the semifinals on Saturday. They are +5.5 point underdogs. The game tips off at 9:49 p.m. EDT in Houston, Texas, and airs on CBS.

The Miami Hurricanes have played to their strengths with great success

The strengths of their squad are many, and the Hurricanes have won close games as well as blowouts.

They pulled away late on to beat Drake in the first round and erased a 13-point deficit in the second half to beat Texas by seven. The Hurricanes are 8-4 in games decided by six points or less.

Coach Larrañaga is great with in-game adjustments. His team erased halftime deficits in two tournament games. They also outscored Houston 47-39 in the second half of their Sweet 16 matchup.

The Hurricanes’ offense is on fire. As a team, they average 79.6 points per game, which is 27th best in the nation. They have scored at least 85 points in their previous three games and rank fifth in adjusted offense, according to KenPom.

Four of their players are averaging double-figures in scoring this season. Junior Isaiah Wong is a fearless leader who won ACC Player of the Year. Senior Jordan Miller was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and 13-for-13 from the free-throw line against Texas.

Big man Norchad Omier is a force on the glass, averaging 10.1 rebounds per game. They have the depth and athleticism to compete with a red-hot UConn team and it should be a spectacle when they meet on the court.
