Karl-Anthony Towns had solid all-around numbers in the New York Knicks’ NBA Cup quarterfinal match clash with the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday at home. It, however, went for naught as they were eliminated by the visitors, 108-100.

The four-time All-Star, acquired by the Knicks from the Minnesota Timberwolves in an offseason trade, had 19 points and 19 rebounds, to go along with five assists, three steals and three blocks in 35 minutes of play in the loss.

Atlanta used a spirited second-half play to turn things around from a 54-47 deficit, with De’Andre Hunter, Trae Young and Jalen Johnson leading the charge. Josh Hart topscored for the hosts with 21 points, with Mikal Bridges adding 19 of his own and Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby 14 and 13 points, respectively. The loss to the Hawks halted the impressive play of Towns and the Knicks in the NBA Cup that saw them lead East Group A with an undefeated 4-0 record heading into the knockout stage.

Atlanta, meanwhile, joined the Milwaukee Bucks and OKC Thunder who have booked semifinals spots in the tournament. The NBA Cup semifinal will take place in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Karl-Anthony Towns a double-double machine in the NBA Cup

While their NBA Cup campaign came to end on Wednesday, Karl-Anthony Towns still had a solid NBA Cup, proving himself as a double-double machine for the New York Knicks.

Including their quarterfinal match against the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday, the former NBA rookie of the year tallied averages of 20.5 points and 14.75 rebounds, to go along with four assists in four games in the NBA’s tournament-within-a-tournament.

Towns’ stellar play in the NBA Cup was an extension of what he is doing in the ongoing season that has seen him post steady numbers of 24.9 points, 13.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and a block for New York (15-10), which is currently fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Karl-Anthony Towns, a four-time NBA All-Star, landed in New York by way of a blockbuster trade involving the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Charlotte Hornets. The deal included All-Star Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo going to the Timberwolves.

With their NBA Cup campaign over, Towns and the Knicks channel their sole focus on the ongoing NBA season that will see them go on the road next on Dec. 19 to play the Timberwolves, marking the first time that Towns will play in a regular season game in his old stomping ground since he was traded to New York.
