Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant is the subject of a potential two-year extension deal worth $120 million, a rumor that has sparked concern among analysts. On Monday, Michael Pina of The Ringer warned that committing such a large sum to Durant would jeopardize the team's long-term goals.

At 36, Durant is still performing at an All-NBA level, averaging 27.1 points per game. However, his age and the team's struggles have led Pina to question whether the extension is worth the risks.

“With all due respect, almost regardless of how their season ends, if the Suns give Durant a two-year, $120 million extension this summer, they are delusional,” Pina wrote.

Pina suggested that the Suns organization should consider trading Durant to replenish their draft picks and create a more sustainable future. However, the Suns' limited flexibility due to the second apron and luxury tax restrictions may complicate any potential trade.

Also, the Suns' (19-19) poor performance, despite having a high payroll, has raised concerns about their ability to compete at the highest level. They are 11th in the Western Conference standings.

Kevin Durant rumored to join the Houston Rockets

Kevin Durant is reportedly attracting interest from the Houston Rockets, according to The Ringer's Michael Pina. KD is eligible for a two-year $121 million extension in the summer with two years and $100.4 million left on his current contract.

"KD is the rare offensive talent who’d make the Rockets (currently second in the West) a legitimate threat to win it all without mangling the long-term development of anyone else on that roster," Pina wrote.

The Sun might not be willing to trade Durant, given his star power and the performance he brings to the team. Although, there's a chance that the two-time NBA champion might want out to a team that gives him a chance at another championship run.

His experience with the Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors indicates how seriously he takes his personal ambitions. It is now up to the Suns to decide whether to continue with the Slim Reaper or rebuild their roster, especially with rumors of Jimmy Butler circulating.
