Kobe Bryant's family have been long-time friends with Pau Gasol and his family. Their friendship was especially strengthened after the tragic death of Kobe and Gianna, with Gasol's constant support for the Bryant family. Pau even named his first daughter, Elisabet Gianna Gasol, in honor of his Lakers teammate and his daughter.
“It’s just a way to honor Gianna, how much she means to us and our family, my wife and I,” Gasol said of the decision. “Gigi was meant to be a superstar. She was a mini-Kobe. She was going to rock this world. The way she was taken from us, so young, so abruptly, broke a lot of people’s hearts. To me she will always be a presence to my daughter.”
Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol's time together for the LA Lakers lasted seven seasons, after which their relationship went beyond the court and into their retirement. Reflecting on his support for Bryant's family after Kobe's demise, Gasol said that Kobe would do the same for him, adding that the Lakers legend would tell him to keep moving forward.
