Eight-time NBA All-Star guard Kyrie Irving is set to miss some time due to an injury. The 2024-25 season hasn't started the way that the Dallas Mavericks have hoped for. After making the NBA Finals last season, they are seventh in the Western Conference.
Things will get even tougher for the Mavs as NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Irving could miss around 1-2 weeks. Charania and Tim McMahon said in an article that was published by ESPN on Monday that the reason for Irving's absence is a lumbar sprain as he has a bulging disc on his back.
A definite timeline has not been set for Irving's return. An update will be provided as he undergoes treatment for the injury.

Irving will join Luka Doncic on the injury list. They will be out against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday.
Doncic got hurt against the Minnesota Timberwolves during their Christmas Day matchup. Meanwhile, Irving will miss his second straight game after he was ruled out against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, although he was listed with an illness.
What is the Dallas Mavericks' record this season when Kyrie Irving is sidelined?
Kyrie Irving has missed just five games so far this season. The Dallas Mavericks' record without him is not encouraging.
Irving first missed a game on Nov. 14 against the Utah Jazz. The Mavs lost 115-113 despite Luka Doncic scoring 37 points. The Jazz put up a balanced offensive effort as all starters scored in double figures led by John Collins with 28. Additionally, Jordan Clarkson scored 20 off the bench.
Irving's next absence came against the Portland Trail Blazers on Dec. 1. That game ended up becoming an offensive showcase, as six players from both teams scored in double figures. Doncic recorded a game-high 36 while Quentin Grimes added 28, helping Dallas win 137-131. It was the only game the Mavs have won this season without Irving.
The next three games Irving missed were against the LA Clippers on Dec. 19 (118-95), the Sacramento Kings on Dec. 30 (110-100) and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday. Irving and Doncic were out of the rotation in all three matchups.
The Mavs' record when Irving doesn't play is 1-4, including 0-3 when he and Doncic are out.
Doncic will reportedly be reevaluated in the last week of January. Along with the expected absence of Irving, the Dallas Mavericks will need other players to step up and keep them on pace in the tough Western Conference.
