The LeBron James-led LA Lakers have been heavily rumored as Utah Jazz big man Walker Kessler's landing spot. The 7-foot Auburn prospect could be a needle-mover for the Lakers with his skillset, especially next to Anthony Davis as his defensive partner, and on offense as LeBron's new pick-and-roll partner.
Logistically, Kessler is a gettable target because of his $2.9 million salary. The Lakers have the picks to entice Jazz, including the option to unprotect the 2027 first-round pick, which they dealt in the Russell Westbrook trade at the February 2023 deadline.
Only 22, Kessler could be a long-term fit, which is critical for the Lakers as they potentially play out the last or final two seasons of LeBron's career. After averaging 10.8 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.5 blocks on 72.0% shooting, Kessler is widely perceived as a player who could move the needle for the Lakers in their championship pursuit. It would be LeBron's fifth ring and LA's record-tying 18th.
However, their biggest rivals, the Boston Celtics, may have other plans. NBA analyst Tim, aka Cranjis McBasketball, fears the Celtics might hijack LA's pursuit of Walker Kessler. After the center was ruled out for Sunday's clash against the Nets, Cranjis tweeted:

"Kessler missed 6 games with a hip injury earlier this season, but otherwise hasn't missed a game this season. He certainly hasn't been held out to rest in one. I continue hearing Utah is open to moving Kessler. I wonder if Boston is close on a deal."
The Celtics haven't shied away from slashing on premier targets over the past few seasons. They have also had their way in the trade market, compared to the Lakers, who have reportedly been asked for more for the same trade targets.
The Celtics own their 2025, 2026, 2027, 2030 and 2031 first-round picks. The Lakers own 2029, 2030 and 2031 first-round picks, along with a 2027 top-four protected pick, which will convey to Utah.
Lakers trade rumors: Rob Pelinka might have to act fast if Celtics are in play for Walker Kessler
The Lakers have limited options to bolster their roster. Walker Kessler is definitely the best target out there to elevate the team, especially with LA adopting a defensive identity lately. However, Kessler is an affordable target for many contenders, including the Celtics.
Rob Pelinka might have to act fast if the Lakers' ultimate choice is Kessler at the trade deadline. Other potential centers don't move the needle and have bloated salaries relative to their production and skillset.
According to numerous NBA rumors, the Lakers are coveting Jonas Valanciunas, Nick Richards, Day'Ron Sharpe and Robert Williams III to upgrade their center rotation. However, they have certain limitations, making them less desirable candidates.
