After trailing 27-24 in the first quarter, the Mavs dominated the game, outscoring the Lakers 94-70. Quentin Grimes came off the bench to lead the hosts with 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Spencer Dinwiddie carried the Mavericks in the early going before Klay Thompson took his turn in the second quarter. Jaden Hardy and P.J. Washington also had their moments. Despite missing Doncic and Irving, Dallas shot 52.3%, including 47.4% from behind the arc.
Anthony Davis ran rings around his defenders in the first half but could not sustain his performance. He finished the game with 21 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. LeBron James added 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

The LA Lakers faced the slumping Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday in the first of three meetings this season. LeBron James and Co. looked to bounce back from a 119-115 loss to the Houston Rockets on Sunday and extend Dallas’ losing streak to five.
Anthony Davis led a balanced attack by the Lakers in the first quarter. The All-Star big man had 10 points, six rebounds and one assist in 12 minutes. LeBron James and Austin Reaves combined for 13 points, helping their team to a 27-24 lead.
Spencer Dinwiddie had a hot start to keep the Mavericks, who played without Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, in striking distance. Dinwiddie had eight points and two assists. Quentin Grimes came off the bench to boost the Mavs with eight points and a rebound.
A defensive slugfest made the game close in the first six minutes of the second quarter. Dallas eventually took control of the period behind Klay Thompson's nine points. Dinwiddie and Grimes also sustained their gritty performance to give the Mavericks a 55-50 halftime lead.
The Mavericks continued to rely on team effort to win the third quarter 34-26. PJ Washington, Spencer Dinwiddie and Quentin Grimes provided the spark on offense. Dereck Lively II anchored the defense to slow down Anthony Davis. Dallas led 89-76 heading into the final quarter.
Los Angeles desperately tried to rally for the win but the home team had an answer to the Lakers' every mini-run. The Mavericks surprisingly cruised to a comfortable 118-97 win.
