The LA Lakers visited the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center on Sunday night. It's their first matchup of the season, with the Rockets winning their last meeting on Jan. 29, 2024. They split last season's series, but the Lakers have won six of the previous 10 meetings.

LeBron James and the Lakers were still without the services of some of their role players such as Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt and Christian Wood. On the other hand, the Rockets played undermanned due to injuries to Jabari Parker Jr. and Tari Eason.

After being down by as much as 22 points in the first half, the LA Lakers battled back to make Sunday's game more interesting. The contest came down to the wire in the fourth quarter, with the Rockets pulling off the 119-115 win. The Lakers had three costly turnovers in the final minute, which was the nail in their coffin.

LA Lakers vs Houston Rockets Game Summary

In the first quarter, the two teams went neck-and-neck in the first nine minutes of the contest. Nine lead changes occurred during that span before the Houston Rockets took over and built a 14-point lead at the end of the first 12 minutes.

Rui Hachimura had eight points for the LA Lakers, while Jalen Green was hot off the bat with 18 points to give Houston a 36-22 lead. "The King" was quiet with just two points and Anthony Davis struggled with two points on 1-for-6 shooting.

The Rockets continued to pile it on in the second quarter, with the lead ballooning to 22 points at one point. The Lakers fought valiantly, led by Austin Reaves, but they only managed to get close by 13 points. Houston entered halftime with a 67-49 advantage.

The LA Lakers began the third quarter by slowly chipping away the Houston Rockets' lead. It was down to just four points at the 4:19 mark before the Rockets rebuilt the advantage up to 10.

However, the Lakers were not going away easily as they mounted another comeback, with the Rockets clinging to a 91-89 lead heading into the final quarter. They were still playing catchup in the final 12 minutes and were within striking distance with under a minute remaining.

LeBron James was called for an offensive foul with 39 seconds remaining. The Lakers followed it up with Max Christie's inbound pass getting stolen by Fred VanVleet with six seconds left. The final one was an offensive foul on Anthony Davis, which negated James' 3-point make with four seconds remaining.

The LA Lakers play in Dallas on Tuesday night, while the Houston Rockets begin a three-game road trip starting against the Washington Wizards.
