The LA Lakers took on the Phoenix Suns at the Footprint Arena on Monday (Oct. 28). Playing the first of their five-game road trip, the Purple and Gold wasted no time in getting off the blocks with their pacy offense and lockdown defense on both ends of the floor. However, they faced stiff competition from the Suns, led by Kevin Durant. In the end, Phoenix held their nerve to get past LA with a 109-105 win.
Both sides fielded regular lineups with LA starting D'Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves, LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, and Anthony Davis. The Suns started Tyus Jones, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, Durant, and Jusuf Nurkic.

LA Lakers vs Phoenix Suns game recap
The Lakers notched up an 18-point lead, courtesy of Anthony Davis' 16-point first-quarter blitz. It appeared that LA learned from their last encounter against the Suns as they upped the pace and outshot their opponents with Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves chipping in with timely buckets.
But Kevin Durant continued to churn on the offense, propping up 12 points in the first quarter to cut the 18-point deficit with a 10-3 run to end the first to 34-25. The Lakers' offense cooled off in the second quarter as the Suns stormed back to cut the lead to just two points. The erratic defense saw LA pay the price in the non-AD minutes. They were outplayed 50-48 in the second quarter.
The third quarter saw the visitors play catchup again, but their offense fired back to life despite James' poor shooting night as they beat Phoenix 35-36. It was all about trading baskets in the final stretch with the Suns fending off a Davis threat with their offense buoyed by Durant and Booker.
Durant ended his evening with 30 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Devin Booker had a season-high 33 points. Davis led LA with 29 points and 15 rebounds. Reaves chipped in with 23 points and eight boards, and Rui Hachimura propped up 20 points and 10 rebounds. James endured a rare shooting struggle with just 11 points to show for it.
Up next, LA takes on James' former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Suns hit the road as well to take on the LA Clippers at the Intuit Dome.
