LeBron James' iconic high school jersey worn in his 2002 Sports Illustrated cover story is going up for auction. James played high school basketball for St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, Ohio from 1999 to 2003 before he got drafted No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
According to The Athletic, the jersey will be up for auction via Julien's in Hong Kong on Sept. 27 at 10:00 p.m. EST. The gold and green jersey was worn during James' Sports Illustrated photoshoot, as well as in many games during his junior season for the Fighting Irish:
"This storied jersey represents the pivotal moment of LeBron's ascension to basketball royalty," Julien's Auction CEO David Goodman said in a statement.

For those who want to bid on LeBron's high school jersey, they will need to register on Julien's Auctions' official website. The jersey is expected to fetch around $1 to $2 million, which is two to four times more than what it previously sold for back in 2012 at $512,000.
If the LA Lakers superstar's high school jersey gets sold for around $1 to $2 million next month, it will break the record for the most expensive memorabilia by a high school athlete. James had an amazing career at St. Vincent-St. Mary, leading the Fighting Irish to three state championships and one national championship.
In addition to the iconic No. 23 Irish jersey, the winning bidder will also take home limited edition images from James' Sports Illustrated photoshoot taken by Michael LeBrecht. One of the images was the iconic photo used for the magazine cover:
"I don't care who I photograph, or if I get another 100 covers or what. I'm never going to photograph anything more iconic than that," LeBrecht told The Athletic.
What is the most expensive LeBron James memorabilia?
While James' high school jersey is set to make history among high school memorabilia, what is the most expensive item involving the four-time NBA champion? The answer is the 2003-04 LeBron James Exquisite Collection Rookie Parallel Card No. 78.
One of the 23 copies of the excellent RPA of "King James" sold for $5.2 million back in April 2021 at PWCC Marketplace. It was the most expensive basketball card back then before the record was broken by a Steph Curry RPA card that was sold for $5.9 million three months later.
In terms of game-worn memorabilia, the one LeBron used in Game 7 of the 2013 NBA Finals for the Miami Heat against the San Antonio Spurs fetched $3.7 million last year at Sotheby's Auction. It was the third-most expansion game-worn jersey sold by the auction house behind Michael Jordan's "Last Dance" jersey and Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" jersey.
