The Luka Doncic to Lakers trade sent shockwaves around the league that are alive to this date, four days after the deal was finalized. The Mavericks, fans, in particular, are still coping with that trade, considering what Doncic meant to the franchise and their future.
Meanwhile, the Lakers' rival fanbases also weren't pleased with it. Celtics fan and NBA podcaster Bill Simmons revealed one of the craziest parallels he heard to the Doncic trade in context of the magnitude of this deal on his podcast on Thursday during the trade deadline. Simmons said few people compared it to the news of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy's assassination in November 1963.
"I had a couple of people say to me that it was like their version of like when JFK got shot," Simmons said.

"I mean in a good way. ... Where they'll always remember where they were. Like, 'I was at dinner and I got a text,' it's like one of those trades that you remember for the rest of your life."
Luka Doncic's trade to the Lakers was seismic and one that nobody saw coming except for the respective GMs and team owners, who were the only ones aware of the deal. LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Luka Doncic were not in loop, neither were their agents.
Doncic was expected to sign a $345 million five-year extension at the season's end with the Mavericks. However, the Mavericks proposed a trade to the Lakers, which Rob Pelinka accepted in exchange for Davis, Max Christie and the 2029 first-round pick.
Luka Doncic's trade to the Lakers blew the deadline wide open
Luka Doncic's trade to the LA Lakers had everyone in disbelief. It also turned out to be a major domino to fall as teams started to believe they could acquire anyone at a relatively affordable price, considering LA only spent one first round pick on the Slovenian superstar.
The Golden State Warriors, for instance, were motivated by the Doncic trade and pursued a Kevin Durant reunion before the Suns superstar rejected a move out of Phoenix. Several other teams reportedly asked for Durant, and the Suns fielded offers but eventually didn't deal their superstar.
The Warriors landed Jimmy Butler instead with Andrew Wiggins as the centeripiece and a protected first round pick in a five-team trade with multiple moving pieces. Meanwhile, the Raptors added Brandon Ingram among other notable moves.
