The Golden State Warriors had no answer for Luka Doncic on Sunday. They put Draymond Green on him, but the point guard only took advantage of mismatches elsewhere.
Doncic hardly slowed down when Jonathan Kuminga took over from Green. Gary Payton II and Brandin Poziemski gave up too much size, which the Slovenian had little trouble exploiting.
Doncic had 45 points behind 16-of-23 shooting (69.6%), including 6-f-11 (54.5%) from deep. He also contributed defensively and ended with three steals and two blocks in what was arguably the All-Star guard’s best performance of the season.
Luka Doncic played much better in the rematch against the Golden State Warriors
The Dallas Mavericks lost 120-117 in their first meeting against the Golden State Warriors. Luka Doncic finished with 31 points, eight rebounds, six assists and committed five turnovers, shooting 13-for-27 but only 2-for-10 in 3-pointers.
Doncic bounced back with a much more effective, efficient and impactful showing in the rematch on Sunday. The Slovenian, much maligned for his defense, had a triple-double in 26 minutes and ended with just three turnovers.
Golden State tried to pick on him defensively, but the slow-footed superstar held his own. In one play in the fourth quarter, Doncic cornered Warriors point guard Brandin Podziemski before eventually blocking his shot.
Once the Mavericks got the ball, Doncic pushed the pace and whipped a pass to Klay Thompson, who splashed a corner 3-pointer. Golden State kept fighting, but Luka Doncic refused to let his team lose.
