NBA fans have let their reactions to Victor Wembanyama proposing a chess tournament for NBA players be known. On Dec. 28, the San Antonio Spurs star sat at the Washington Square Park, randomly playing chess against fans.
The 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year was in New York City, playing two consecutive games, against the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks. After the game against the Nets, he spent some time going up against random fans.
Reacting to a post by NBA on X, Victor Wembanyama suggested an "NBA players-only Chess tournament."
"We need an NBA players only Chess tournament, proceeds go to the charity of choice of the winner," he wrote.

The proposition immediately received reactions from fans on social media. Some even wrote that they would put money on the Spurs star.
"Man, I put my money on you. Who else in the NBA can play good chess? HMMM," a fan wrote.
So many fans hailed Jaylen Brown as the best chess player in the NBA and one fan particularly called out the Boston Celtics star to face Wembanyama and put the buzz to rest.
"I’m calling out my hometown hero (Jaylen Brown)! Don’t let this young man make you run and hide!" the fan wrote.
"Jaylen Brown winning easily," another fan wrote.
One of the fans posted a picture of Luka Doncic and wrote that he would destroy Wemby on the chessboard.
"Luka gonna destroy you," the fan wrote.
Some of the fans also hilariously trolled Brooklyn Nets star Ben Simmons and Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green.
"Ben Simmons staring at the board, refusing to move a single piece," one fan wrote.
"Draymond be like, reaching across the table to swing at the player," another fan wrote.
Victor Wembanyama against LeBron James hasn't been box office on the NBA court, but a fan said that the Lakers star playing against Wembanyama would be legendary.
"Wemby vs LeBron chess match would have the highest ratings of all time," a fan wrote.
Victor Wembanyama revealed his love for chess
Unlike many of his Gen-Z peers, Victor Wembanyama is an old soul. He doesn't like spending much time watching TikTok or reels on Instagram. Instead, the Spurs player likes to read fiction or play chess on mobile applications.
Earlier this year in February, Victor Wembanyama spoke with the San Antonio Express-News. During the conversation, he revealed that he likes playing chess because it helps with his mental workout.
"It's something that makes the brain work a little bit," Wembanyama told the San Antonio Express-News in February. "You have to adapt strategy and think about multiple actions and think two or three moves in the future."
In September, Victor Wembanyama was pictured playing chess against Stanford senior Maxime Raynaud, who is also from France.
There is no knowing how good the Frenchman is. However, Wemby going out in open, challenging random people confirms one fact; he doesn't have a shaky hand on the chessboard.
