Ahead of the start of the NBA playoffs, Luka Doncic sat down with ESPN’s Malika Andrews for a candid, wide-ranging one-on-one interview. During the interview, Doncic spoke openly about the blockbuster trade that sent him to the LA Lakers before the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
As he hung up the phone after being informed of the trade, Doncic said he threw it in frustration, shattering the back. In a clip posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Andrews on Friday ahead of the full interview airing on NBA Today, Doncic’s manager, Lara Beth Seager, showed Andrews the phone, with Doncic saying he still uses it to this day.

While he was initially blindsided and shocked by the trade, Doncic is now settling in and finding his rhythm in LA. As he told Andrews, LeBron James has been "great" since Day 1.

Luka Doncic opens up on first-round series vs. Timberwolves, reflects on dagger over Rudy Gobert
During last year’s Western Conference finals between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic gave Dallas a 2-0 series lead on the road with a dagger 3-pointer in Game 2.
With the clock winding down, the Mavericks forced a switch, leaving Rudy Gobert to guard Doncic alone on the perimeter.
After faking a drive, Doncic stepped back and fired a 3-pointer over the four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year to put Dallas up by one. As he backpedaled down the court, Doncic was seen talking trash to Gobert and the Timberwolves, adding some flair to the highlight-reel moment.
Now, as he and the Lakers prepare to face the Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs, Doncic was asked about the moment by Andrews.
As he explained, he thinks Gobert is a great defender; however, he simply enjoys being guarded by centers.
"I mean he's a great defender. No matter who it is, I just like to go against centers."
Game 1 of the Lakers-Timberwolves series tips off at 8:30 p.m. ET tomorrow in LA. Game 2 is scheduled for Tuesday before the series shifts to Minnesota for Games 3 and 4.
