Klay Thompson, a four-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors, has a bleak future. Playing for the Warriors all of his NBA years, Thompson will be entering free agency with a lot of uncertainties in his future with his longtime team, while other clubs try to lure him into transferring.
One team that has emerged in suiting Thompson is the Western Conference champions Dallas Mavericks, who are fresh from a 4-1 loss in the NBA finals against the eventual champions Boston Celtics.
In a report by Marc Stein via Legion Hoops on X, Thompson and the Mavericks have a “strong mutual interest” and are “expected” to be one of the teams to look out for in Thompson’s free agency decision.

If Thompson joins the Mavericks, Klay will form a superstar trio alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, who have a long history with Thompson as they battled before in the NBA finals.
While the rumors about Thompson have been constantly changing, NBA fans gave their two cents on his potential arrival with the Mavericks. Reacting to the rumors, fans expressed the thrill of adding Thompson to the Dallas mix that recently went to the NBA finals.
“Great spot for Klay to start a new chapter, they need another shooter,” said one fan.
“He trynna end his career with more rings than curry and draymond omg,” said another fan.
“That’s gonna be a movie,” another fan said.
Meanwhile, others displayed their skepticism about the possible move as it may disrupt the Mavericks’ already-intact championship core.
“Luka will kill Klay after an 0/9 shooting half,” said one fan.
“He doesn’t fit there,” one fan said.
“Mavs getting worse by adding him 😂” said another fan.
Klay Thompson’s final game with the Warriors was in a play-in game against the Sacramento Kings, where he scored 0 points and missed all of his 10 shots.
Klay Thompson also on former champion Denver Nuggets’ radar
After three-and-D shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope declined his player option, the Denver Nuggets may be looking at Thompson to replace him in the upcoming season, according to The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Anthony Slater.
“If the Nuggets lose free-agent-to-be Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who has decided to decline his player option and enter the market, a league source said Denver has pegged Thompson as a possible replacement,” the report said.
Thompson could fill the shooting guard role if Caldwell-Pope left in free agency, adding a veteran presence to the Nuggets, which lost in the second round in the playoffs.
The potential move could also set Thompson up for another deep playoff run alongside reigning MVP Nikola Jokic, and Jamal Murray.
Thompson remained a serviceable contributor last season with the Warriors, averaging 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists on 38.7% shooting from three.
