Marina Mabrey's impact on Game 1
The Connecticut Sun acquired Marina Mabrey before the 2024 WNBA All-Star Weekend. The Sun parted ways with Rachel Banham, Moriah Jefferson, a first-round pick and rights to swap their 2026 first-round picks. It was a move that proved Connecticut was looking to win a championship.
Mabrey is one of the best 3-point shooters in the league and instantly helped the Sun finish third in the WNBA. She was huge in the team's two-game sweep of the Indiana Fever in the first round.
In Game 1 of the semifinals of the 2024 WNBA playoffs, the six-year veteran continued her hot shooting. She made six of their 11 attempts from beyond the arc. While she only had two points in the fourth quarter, she made timely shots in the first three quarters that kept the Sun afloat all game.
Marina Mabrey had five points in the first quarter, scoring her first three points to break a deadlock at the 4:09 mark. She then put the Sun up by nine points with a floater late in the first period.
In the second quarter, Mabrey hit a 3-point shot to snap a 15-0 run by the Lynx that turned Connecticut's big lead into a six-point advantage. If she hadn't made that shot, the game could have been blown out and already over.
The Sun faced another Minnesota run in the third quarter but Mabrey kept the team in the game by scoring seven points in the period. It was a back-and-forth contest before Connecticut pulled it off late in the fourth quarter, courtesy of Alyssa Thomas.
