The Miami Heat may not have Jimmy Butler suiting up in the playoffs if they make it this season. The forward suffered a knee injury during Wednesday's 105-104 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers in the play-in tournament and could be sidelined for "an indefinite period".

At the time of writing, the Heat will face the Chicago Bulls for the No. 8 seed skirmish at the Kaseya Center on Friday (Apr. 19) and will do so without their star in the mix.

As for their playoff hopes, the Heat and the Bulls find themselves in the same position as they did last season, with both sides battling for the No. 8 seed.

The Bulls visited Miami but were sent packing. The Heat went on to defy odds and make the NBA Finals, where they were beaten comprehensively by the Denver Nuggets.

This time around, the Heat's chances of making the playoffs and then edging past the Boston Celtics will depend on Butler's availability. Miami has made a deeper run in the postseason, with "Playoff Jimmy" turning up season in and out.

Last year, he averaged 26.9 points per game after switching to a different gear in the playoffs. This season, he averages 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists from 60 games.

Jimmy Butler to undergo several medical procedures

Butler took a hit in the first quarter when he scrambled for a layup in transition and collided with Sixers' forward Kelly Oubre Jr. He was seen in visible discomfort but remained in the game.

Speaking to the media after the game, the 34-year-old said he would undergo an MRI and said he was left with the feeling that he "couldn't do too much".

According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Butler is reported to have suffered an MCL injury and could be out without a timeline for his return.
