Shaquille O'Neal pours water on hype surrounding Victor Wembanyama's dominance ahead of 2024-25 NBA season
During his rookie year, Victor Wembanyama put the league on notice, showcasing some remarkably dominant play throughout the year. He set several NBA records at the same time while joining some elite companies in the NBA history books.
For example, Wemby became the first rookie since Alonzo Mourning and Shaquille O'Neal in 1992 to record 250+ blocks. In addition, he also became the first rookie since O'Neal to record a 40-point 20-rebound game. He was also the first rookie in NBA history to record 1,500 points, 250 assists and 250 blocks in a season.
Despite that and that Wembanyama finished the year as a Defensive Player of the Year finalist while averaging a double-double, Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal doesn't believe that Wembanyama can be a dominant player in the league. During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show this week, Shaq explained:
“Wemby is a great player, but I don't really think you can be dominant when you shoot jumpers a lot. I think if he was an inside player at 7'5", the answer will be 'yes' but when you shoot jumpers, you're always going to go up and down. But he's a fine player; I wish him well."
While O'Neal has doubted Wembanyama's chances of being an incredibly dominant player, former NBA guard Patrick Beverley has sung the big man's praises. During this week's episode of his Pat Bev Pod, Beverley declared that he believes Wembanyama will be the most dominant player in the NBA.
