San Antonio Spurs' rising star, Victor Wembanyama, is one of the most popular players in the NBA, receiving massive amounts of media attention, both on television and social media. After the game against the Brooklyn Nets on Dec. 27, Wembanyama gave up his jersey to a fan postgame.

On Wednesday, NBACentral announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the jersey is now up for auction.

Fans shared their reactions, with some criticizing the fan for prioritizing money over the sentimental value of the jersey, while others were more sympathetic.

Fans were critical of the decision and voiced their opinion.

"It's all a cash grab and it hurts to see," another said.
"This has been happening for the last 20 years at least via ebay," a user commented.
"Man U know the kid didn’t list that jersey his parents being greedy lol," one fan tweeted.

Other fans came to the seller's defense. The support centered around the fact that fans have been doing this for a while and the possible reasons for the sale.

"I mean its a jersey, in this economy I don't blame them one bit," another user said.
"What’s the problem if its going to another fan if not a bigger fan," a fan commented.
"Well it’s money over heart for 99% of sports organizations as well I don’t see a problem," a fan said.

An X user claiming to be the recipient's father wrote:

"Actually my son wanted to sell it after we went to get it authenticated they told him he can get 100,000 plus for it and he is giving the money to our family in California who lost their house to the fires so before anyone talks shit , they should know some facts."

Victor Wembanyama's merchandise will continue to increase in value as his play improves

Fans who own Victor Wembanyama products should hold onto them and let them build value as the former No. 1 overall pick continues to ascend in the NBA. The second-year pro is likely on the brink of his first All-Star appearance, averaging 25.1 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks per contest for the San Antonio Spurs.

It has been an excellent sophomore season for Wembanyama, who is trying to lead the Spurs to the postseason. They find themselves at 19-19 and sit ninth in the Western Conference. However, they are right in the thick of contention, only two games behind the fifth-place LA Clippers.
