Meanwhile, X user Sovereign Blu3 (@SovereignTheBlu) pointed at the fact that JR Smith tagged the wrong Dan Hurley account.
"That's not even him JR lmfao," the fan posted.
X user E.P. the Dreamer (@EPtheDreamer), on the other hand, was puzzled by Smith's post as he highlighted how he used to be part of the Lakers in 2020 and even received a championship ring that year.
"Fall for what? Bro you rode our coattails of a championship eligible team to a championship run. Shut it," the fan posted.
Moreover, X user Laker Andy (@AChad92) mocked Smith's tweet by comparing it to the time he got the game clock wrong during a pivotal moment in Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals.
"Just like the game clock once again you just can't get it right," the fan posted.
Additionally, X user Hassan 2x Champion Jarra (@neilyparz) listed the actual Dan Hurley account on X and provided a hilarious suggestion as well.
"Lol he's @dhurley15 but you should just shoot him a text to be sure," the fan posted.
After all the comments received, JR Smith has yet to follow up on his original post. It also remains to be seen what final route the Lakers take in their head coach hire.
The time Dan Hurley benched JR Smith and took Tristan Thompson off his team
There was a time when Dan Hurley showcased his commanding disciplinary style towards a young JR Smith and Tristan Thompson. Before he became a back-to-back champion for the UConn Huskies, Hurley was the head coach of the St. Benedict's Prep School.
Now headmaster of the school, Father Edwin Leahy recalled a time when Hurley benched JR Smith for a game, as per a phone interview with NJ Advance Media's Adam Zagoria.
"JR Smith and ... Alex Galindino," Leahy said, "didn't play in a Blair [Academy] game in the state tournament because they left school without permission to get a haircut. He sat them on the bench.
The same disciplinary move was done to Tristan Thompson who couldn't keep his emotions in check in front of Dan Hurley.
"Tristan Thompson took a three, probably the only three that he took all year, and walked back on defense," Leahy said. "As he walked by Danny, he was mumbling something. Danny said, 'You're not talking to me, are you?' And the kid continued to mutter. [Hurley] said, 'I can't coach you.' He was done, he never played again for us."
Looking at these two instances, it's clear that Hurley prioritizes professionalism in how he develops his players. Whether they agree with his methods or not, it goes a long way for athletes who are seeking a shot at making it in the big leagues.
From Hurley's perspective, that goal all starts with being a disciplined player at a young age while continuing to grow in the following years.
