NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is facing criticism and scrutiny amid the league’s falling ratings. Multiple reports emerged at the start of the 2024-25 season that ratings are down 48% over the last 12 years. Fans and former players named the spike in 3-point attempts as one of the biggest reasons many have tuned out of the league.

Silver addressed the issue during an interview with Colin Cowherd:

"I don’t wanna knee-jerk just move the 3-point line. We’re sort of going through the process now, seeing how these players are adapting to the new rules and figuring out whatever changes we should make. I wish it were as simple as just moving the 3-point line back."
"I assure you, we’re on it. … As stewards of the game, we will tweak it. We will correct those issues."

When Adam Silver started his tenure as the NBA commissioner during the 2014-15 season, the league averaged 22.4 3-point attempts per game. A decade into his stint as the league’s top executive, teams are jacking up 37.6 3PAs.

Charles Barkley said that the games have been “awful” to watch. Shaquille O’Neal shares the same sentiment as other former NBA players. Silver opened up in the interview that the legendary Bob Cousy has been asking him to do something about the growing 3-point attempts.

Unless the rules are changed, teams will not stop hoisting 3-pointers as the shot gives them better chances of winning games. The Boston Celtics averaged 42.5 3PA during last year’s title run. To defend their championship, they have become even more aggressive, putting up 49.3 attempts from deep per game this season.

The fans, the bread and butter of the NBA, have been turned off. Adam Silver is assuring them that they are “on it” and will “correct those issues.” Just what changes will be introduced and how they will be implemented them is anybody's guess.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addresses load management issues

Colin Cowherd didn’t just stop with the 3-point issues hounding the NBA. The veteran sports analyst also questioned Adam Silver about his thoughts and plans about load management.

Silver responded that load management became such an issue that the next CBA inserted a new clause that addressed the problem. Players had more incentive to play because major awards and some performance bonuses require a minimum number of games played.

The league commissioner added:

"We're going to be in a position where we can convince the teams and players that actually playing is in their interest."

Adam Silver added that the NBA has already “dispelled the notion” of holding out players due to overload. He continued that early season injuries in some players are due to “not having enough load.”

The commissioner remained positive that the league would figure out what to do to bring back the fans to the game.
