Victor Wembanyama is the prize in next year's draft, which is why there are teams dreaming of getting their hands on a player who could be a generational prospect. In ESPN draft expert's Jonathan Givony's recent mock draft, he envisioned the Detroit Pistons, who have the NBA's worst record, landing the Frenchman.
If the draft lottery were to be held today, Detroit's 9-28 record would give the Pistons a 14.0% chance of getting the top prospect. However, the teams with the three worst records will all have a 14.0% chance, so the odds would be the same for the Charlotte Hornets (9-26) and Houston Rockets (10-24).
As it is, the Western Conference-leading New Orleans Pelicans (22-12) would have a 9.0% chance because they can swap first-round picks with the LA Lakers (14-21).
The lottery is May 16. The draft will be June 19.

The season isn't over and the lottery hasn't been held, which gives other teams a shot at landing at Wembanyama in June.
Victor Wembanyama being paired with the Pitsons' young core would be scary
The Detroit Pistons have one of the best young cores in the NBA today. Compared to the other rebuilding teams, they've acquired some of the best young talents in the past two seasons. For this reason alone, other teams should work to not allow Detroit to draft the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama easily.
Detroit is building around Cade Cunningham (the No. 1 pick in 2021), Jaden Ivey (No. 5 in June) and Jalen Duren (No. 13 in June). These three lottery picks have already shown brilliance in their young careers.
Cunningham, who made the All-Rookie team last season, had season-ending shin surgery earlier this month.
Jaden Ivey has taken over the role of the backcourt star in Cunningham's absence. The 20-year old guard has been stellar. It's only his first year, but he's shown promise that he belongs in the league. Ivey is averaging 15.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 33 games.
Jalen Duren, on the other hand, has been cleaning up the glass for Detroit. Duren's first-year stats are somewhat similar to that of a past player in the franchise, Andre Drummond. He's only 19 years old, but has shown incredible effort and talent as a young big. The former big man for Memphis is averaging 7.6 ppg and 8.6 rpg.
With this talent already in the team, adding someone like Victor Wembanyama could cause other teams to tremble. Still, the 2023 draft isn't until June and things can still change.
